Curbing the ‘bad’ cholesterol for a healthier heart


Many of us have heard that there is ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol, but do you know what each one does within in the body? HDL, or the ‘good’ cholesterol, is known to protect the heart from disease and tends to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it’s passed from the body. We need the ‘good’ cholesterol to help create hormones like adrenalin, estrogen and testosterone. Whereas, LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol actually accumulates on artery walls hardening into plaque that can block blood flow leading to stroke, heart disease or a heart attack.

Foods that can raise your ‘good’ cholesterol and help protect your heart

To help keep the ‘bad’ cholesterol at bay try adding some of these great foods to your diet:

Garlic – Clinical trials have shown that eating about two cloves of garlic per day may help prevent clogging of the arteries and reduce your risk of a heart attack. But it’s not only the amount you eat but also how you prepare it that may be the trick to enhancing the benefits. Chopping or crushing garlic in a press and letting it sit for 10 minutes releases more of its therapeutic properties. So the next time you add garlic to your recipes make sure you chop it and let it sit.

Adding garlic: stir one teaspoon of chopped garlic into 2 tablespoons of low-fat mayo to use on sandwiches or wraps.

Extra-virgin olive oil – Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, which can lower LDL when they replace saturated fats in the diet. “In fact, every 1 percent decrease in your intake of saturated fat – can reduce your LDL level by 2 percent,” says R.D. Melissa Ohlson. What you need to watch out for is replacing your saturated fat with carbohydrates like white bread or low-fat cookies, which can lower your LDL’s, but they also lower your HDL as well.

Adding unsaturated fats by cooking with olive oil, avocado, and nuts will help keep your cholesterol in check.

Almonds – A recent study from the University of Toronto found that adults, who ate an ounce of almonds a day as part of a healthy diet, lowered their LDL levels by 13 to 20 percent. Almonds are particularly heart-healthy because they have the most vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant known to help protect the heart.

Adding almonds: toast the almonds with spices or herbs in a pan at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes to bring out the flavor!

Keeping Your Blood Sugar in Check For a Healthy Heart

To help prevent big spikes in your blood sugar levels researches from the University of Tasmania, found that adults who ate a chili-seasoned burger with a sugary beverage, had their blood sugar levels much lower than when they finished the drink and the burger without the chili spice.

How to add cayenne to your diet: Next time you make homemade salsa or sauce make sure to drop a teaspoon or more of this fiery substance. Give your next chocolate dessert a little POW with cayenne pepper.

3 Mint sprigs
1-2 teaspoon of organic sugar
3 tablespoons of fresh lime juice
1 ½ oz of Coconut rum or light rum

Antioxidants 101


The latest buzz around the health industry today is antioxidants. Research has shown that antioxidants provide a wide range of benefits when it comes to the sustainability of your health. These helpful compounds help with cholesterol and blood pressure stabilization. They aid in the break up of plaque in the blood vessels ultimately supporting the body’s circulatory system and enhancing blood flow. They are a great source for enhanced energy levels and they improve nutrient uptake at the cellular level which leads to many health benefits including healthy aging.

What are antioxidants and how do they work?
We know that antioxidants are good for us. But what are antioxidants and why are they so good for us? To truly understand the answer to this question, we must first understand how antioxidants work.

As we all know, we need oxygen to live. But oxygen has one major downside in comparison to the many benefits it gives us. Oxygen initiates a process in our body called “oxidation”. Under normal circumstances, our cells are made up of molecules that have a full set of electrons, which are responsible for keeping them stable. Think of these molecules as three legs on a three-legged stool. The stool is stable with all three legs, but as soon as one of those legs is missing, the stool falls and looses its functionality. When oxygen comes in contact with these molecules, they lose an electron (or they get “oxidized”), which converts them to an unstable type of molecule known as a free radical.

Because of their instability, free radicals are always scavenging the body looking for other molecules to attach to and steal their electrons for their own stability. During this scavenger hunt, free radicals will attack proteins, fats, and even DNA to look for these electrons. Once they find those electrons and steal them, the molecules they attack get their structure changed, which ultimately affects their function. Eventually, those structures cannot perform their function as efficiently as they would have before they were attacked by roaming free radicals.

The answer to keeping these free radical from attacking our body are antioxidants. Antioxidants immobilize free radicals by donating one of their electrons to replace the ones lost during the oxidation process. The body produces antioxidants naturally, but with the ever-changing environment we have reached a point where our body cannot sustain enough antioxidant production naturally to help with the growing free radical intake. Supplementing with antioxidants will aid in efficient free radical neutralization.

When it comes to outward signs of aging, there’s no shortage of theories about the causes. Why Nutrition?
If you live to 65 years old you will have had over 70,000 meals and your body would have expelled at least 50 tons of food. When you drink a soda, you fool the stomach with what appears to be food. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is released every time we eat to help digest protein. As you drink a soda the hydrochloric acid remains in the stomach since there is no protein to digest. The only protein to buffer the acid is the lining of you stomach – which can lead to peptic ulcers and other ailments of the digestive tract.

A diet high in fiber helps keep our internal piping clean. Fiber helps maintain healthy blood sugar, digestive system and may help in weight loss. Low fiber diets can increase the normal flow up to 96 or more hours. When fecal matter is impacted in the colon the toxins can be reabsorbed into the blood stream and begin to pollute our blood and organs, which can lead to the poisoning of the body.
